Time-Honored Skills & Hand-Made Crafts

The ring of a smith's hammer on the anvil, the hearty laughter of the community gathered around a quilt in the making, the smooth husking of a drawknife on fine wood, the steady click of knitting needles in skilled hands... These are the sounds of the essential skills that meant survival in the sometimes unforgiving wilderness of pioneer Appalachia. Housewares, tools, furniture, even homes, were not bought and carted into these mountains for many generations. These things were crafted by the hands of those who settled here, usually out of pure utility or necessity, but nonetheless made with all of the care and love that was felt for those the goods were made for—children, parents, neighbors, friends.

Although no longer practiced purely out of need, the majority of these old ways can still be found alive and well in the mountains. Some folks take them up as art forms, for the beauty or simplicity of the finished products. Others simply enjoy the easy relaxation that comes from working with their hands, a human trait that will never entirely disappear. Regardless of the reasons, the mountains are teeming with potters, quilters, blacksmiths, woodwrights, and others—dozens of these talented folks will be on hand for the Festival. Visitors can browse the finished hand-made treasures, talk to the folks who make them, see the skilled hands at work actually creating them, and occasionally get the chance to try their own hands at the task.
