| Field Events for Young and Young at Heart |

|
Discussion of the local Mountaineer Festivals of old always bring one word to mind—FUN. Sure, visitors can come and watch all of the different field events that occur throughout the day, and likely have a grand old time, but that might just result in a touch of melancholy at the end of the day. So, to be safe, when getting ready to ride into Clayton on Saturday morning, go ahead and dress in some comfortable, older clothes that can handle a litte dirt or some grass stains, just in case.
Have the kids ever had to chase down and catch their own supper? Chances are that they haven't, short of a sibling playing keep-away with the chicken nuggets. One of the highlights of the day, it's hard to say who has the most fun during the Festival's pig chase events for different age groups—all of the kids pelting around the arena after the pig, or the spectators watching around the arena's perimeter. The looks of surprise, concentration, and excitement on the kids' faces are priceless, as are the quick turns and spectacular escapes that the pig usually manages to make. (Don't worry, though, the pigs go home safe at the end of the day.)
Ever wondered just how long it really takes to saw through a log with an old two-man crosscut saw—the kind most commonly seen these days hanging on a wall with a picturesque painting covering the blade? Want to team up with one of the kids for an old-school three-legged race? Take your shots on the archery range for a chance at prizes or pick up an axe and see who can give Paul Bunyan a run for his money—there's something for everyone to try their hand at, and ribbons or prizes to be won in most events.
