| Scarecrows in the Community Garden |

|
The facility and grounds where the Festival is held were once Clayton's high school gym and football field. The gym was renovated and became the Civic Center. Likewise, the football field serves other purposes now, as well. Part of the field spends the growing season as home to the Old School Community Garden, which offers plots, tools, and seeds for interested folks to raise their own food and build ties to other like-minded members of the community—those who like to know where their food really comes from. Of course, no garden is complete without a scarecrow to keep various birds and other critters from eating the tasty crops before harvest time.
While simpler things like aluminum pie tins and more complicated things like automated airhorns have come along to keep pesky critters frightened away, there's still something very satisfying about seeing a well-outfitted scarecrow standing guard over the summer's hard-won crops. On the day of the Festival, the Community Garden will be protected by a whole troop of stuffy-guys, created by local organizations and individuals. Be sure to take a stroll through the Garden, admire the remaining fruits (and vegetables) of the gardeners' labor, and pick out a favorite scarecrow. Wander through the Garden again later in the day and see if the contest judges agreed on that favorite, and maybe even place a bid on it in the silent auction. Proceeds benefit Sustainable Mountain Living Communities, the organization responsible for the Old School Community Garden.
For information on entering the scarecrow contest, contact Mary Line at 706-746-7349.
